Over 100 people have been arrested in the Occupy Wall Street movement today. The people of the United States are beginning to rise up in a similar form that are reminding us of the uprisings that we saw earlier this year in Egypt, Tunisia, Spain and London. We hope to see this movement grow amidst the police repression and the corporate media blackout. ¡Que viva la resistencia!

The military component of the DREAM ACT has drawn criticism because it acts as another military recruitment tool in our community. When the DREAM ACT was attached to the Dept. of Defense Bill it became even more evident how the military would benefit from this legislation. The DREAM ACT movement has responded to this criticism by stating that anyone who criticized the DREAM ACT was comparable to Glenn Beck or the Ultra Right of this country. The DREAM ACT movement also stated that only those affected by this legislation have the right to criticize the DREAM ACT and its military component. This video testimony comes from a student that would actually stand to benefit from the DREAM ACT, but is unwilling to support this legislation due to the fact that the majority of people affected by the DREAM ACT will only have the choice to join the military or stay undocumented.

As Latinos grow into America’s largest minority, the community is being targeted by the US military as a new and steady source of recruits. Entering into the lowest and most dangerous ranks, Latinos have been disproportionately killed in American’s latest wars.

“Yo Soy el Army : America’s New Military Caste,” Big Noise’s co-production with Producciones Cimarron, looks at the militarization of the immigration debate. Alongside the Spanish-language media campaigns, the false promises and stringent laws that have even resulted in the deportation of non-citizen veterans, the US government is now considering the DREAM Act, legislation that offers a path to citizenship through military service.
