Subsistencia are an Indigenous Tribal political punk band from Los Angeles. Subsistencia was born out of the frustration and the realization of our oppression as a people with a history stemming over 500 years. Rooted in the anarcho-punk scene, the band consciously began to develop a deeper desire to understand and educate ourselves in our culture, our history and our freedom as an indigenous people of this continent. We believe we have suffered social degredation, political oppression and economic exploitation. Part of our mission as a collective of musicians is to be able to create a space where the ideas to combat the enemy on these three levels is possible. We believe through education and the unity of our nation we can truly defeat the enemy, that not only steals our land and imprisons our warriors, but the world in general. Subsistencia is the word for subsistence in Spanish. We believe that is what our people have done for the last 5 centuries. Our time of subsistence must pass and be born into a time of life and growth. Part of our message is the genetic memory that we carry as a people, and we include in our music the blend of pre-hispanic instruments and modern day instruments. The message of our music is that unity, history, culture, spirituality and the personal revolution. Our collective began few years ago and we continue to grow and learn more. We hope that through dialogue we can overcome many of the issues that separate us as humans, so that we can see ahead and try to build something for our children and for the generations to come. We invite all nations to learn their history and their culture. Though this may not be an easy road to take, it is one that will enable us to reach our true humanity.

Producciones Cimarrón is an Independent Media and Social Concept.

During colonial times in Mexico runaway rebel slaves were called Cimarrones, these rebels created a culture of resistance that lead to the building of autonomous communities that ultimately abolished slavery. Producciones Cimarrón is in the process of building a collective thought that can continue the legacy of our Cimarrón ancestors. 

From organizing with immigrant workers to producing popular educational materials with rural campesinos, Producciones Cimarrón continues to build its capacity through our collective community struggles.
About KPFK ‘Travel Tips For Aztlan’

KPFK 90.7 FM is listener-supported, public radio, one of five Pacifica Radio stations. One of the most influential public stations in the Western United States, KPFK is also home of the radio show Travel Tips for Aztlan. TTFA is hosted by Mark Torres and Mariluz Gonzalez and features the best music from the Latin youth culture, including rock, salsa, cumbia, ska, electronica and more.

NEW YORK – Responding to the news Wednesday that Lou Dobbs will leave his post as a longtime anchor on CNN, the leaders of BastaDobbs.com – a national Latino-led coalition that had been advocating for his ouster – released the following statement:

“Our contention all along was that Lou Dobbs – who has a long record of spreading lies and conspiracy theories about immigrants and Latinos – does not belong on the ‘Most Trusted Name in News,’” said Roberto Lovato, co-founder of Presente.org, a national online advocacy organization coordinating the BastaDobbs.com campaign in conjunction with more than 40 local and regional Latino organizations from across the country. “We are thrilled that Dobbs no longer has this legitimate platform from which to incite fear and hate.”

The BastaDobbs.com campaign launched in mid-September, and included online petitions, a viral YouTube video, text-message campaign, radio PSAs and a series of events in 18 cities – organized in conjunction with the CNN special Latino in America. The message to CNN was that courting Latino viewers while keeping Dobbs on the network would not with them favor with the fastest-growing demographic in the country. Since then, more than 100,000 people have joined the effort. The events and the campaign garnered significant press coverage in both Spanish-language and mainstream media.

Lovato said the BastaDobbs.com victory marks a key turning point for the Latino community, as it moved from marching in the streets in 2006 to mounting a successful, high-tech campaign against one of the biggest and strongest media voices against common-sense immigration reform.

“The community is newly empowered and energized, and we are ready to fight for a respectful and civil media discourse when it comes to immigration coverage on mainstream news,” Lovato said. “This is only the beginning of a much longer-term effort.”

Brand new print of Erenesto Yerena and Sheperd Fairey against Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio is sheriff of Maricopa County in Phoenix, Arizona and is known for his mass racial profiling of the latino community, deputizing and arming racist posse members and abusing prisoners in his tent city. No official is above the law, and yet Sheriff Arpaio has engaged in racial profiling and civil rights abuses for years with impunity. We hope this new print by Ernesto Yerena and Sheperd Fairey  will help expose the racism and abuses of Sheriff Joe Arapio.
